China and Its Leaders : Past, Present, and Future
China, now the world's second most powerful country after the United States, aims to become a powerhouse of socialist modernization. How did this once-impoverished nation transform into a superpower challenging global hegemony? We look for the answer with Professor David Shambaugh, a leading global authority on China based in the US, the world's political epicenter.
In the GREAT MINDS China series, Professor Shambaugh of George Washington University begins by examining the footsteps of Chinese leaders leading up to today's China under Xi Jinping. From Mao Zedong, China's founding father; Deng Xiaoping, who led the nation's economic growth through the reform and opening policy; Jiang Zemin, who accelerated the reform and opening by attracting foreign investment and embracing the capitalist class; Hu Jintao, who expanded the scope of China's foreign relations; to Xi Jinping, China's current president starting his third term – Shambaugh delves into their accomplishments and failures, as well as the hidden personal histories behind their leadership. Through his analysis, we examine how the background and ideology of each leader has influenced present-day China.
