On Freedom
Freedom. It’s such a familiar word, and a concept that most of us think we know well. However, do we really? Each person and epoch have a different idea of what freedom is. The concept is rather difficult to define. What exactly is freedom?
In this lesson, Slavoj Žižek begins with the paradoxes of freedom as he alights on the path to define its essence. In the first lesson, “The Concept of Freedom,” Žižek gives his own definition of true freedom. In the third lesson, “How to Change the Past,” he discusses the freedom to reinterpret the past and what it means. “Liberty and freedom,” he diagnoses today’s situation of radicalism, “corporate neo-feudal order,” work uncertainty, and more through the meaning of “liberty” and “freedom.” “False Peace,” he analyses why people do not take action to solve problems despite knowing what causes them. “Vladimir Putin's Philosophy,” he delves into the ideological background of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
